Olisa: Naija Sings' Charming Leading Man

Date 2009/07/08   Comments 34

With 20 years experience in the entertainment industry, leading Nigerian music commentator and trendsetter Olisa Adibua has lost none of his enthusiasm or his passion for the job.
With 20 years experience in the entertainment industry, with roles ranging from radio and television personality to concert host, leading Nigerian music commentator and trendsetter Olisa Adibua has lost none of his enthusiasm or his passion for the job.

Now, taking on a central role as presenter of M-Net's Naija Sings, he's bringing his unique insight and long-established reputation to the hip new reality series.

Commenting on his new role, following on from his continental TV debut as the host of Big Brother Nigeria, Adibua says he was interested from the very start in participating on Naija Sings.

"I was interested in hosting Naija Sings not just to be directly involved in unearthing new and undiscovered talent, but also I see Naija Sings as a TV series that will bridge the gap between Nigerian musicians of the past and the current hit-makers in the Nigerian music industry. This falls directly in line with one of my major career philosophies: to entertain and educate audiences simultaneously and there was no way I would not be interested in hosting a project of this magnitude, which I believe will capture not just Nigeria's but also Africa's imagination."

A director with Storm 360 Ltd. who are producing Naija Sings for M-Net, Adibua has long been involved in showcasing and celebrating Nigerian talent.

His enviable list of credits includes such highlights as directing, producing and presenting the Nigerian music programs Top of the Pops and Super Sounds. In addition, he spent ten years in the highly popular drive time slot at Cool FM before moving into the role of morning drive time host and program director on The Beat 99.9 FM.

He's very enthusiastic about the new production and encourages audiences to tune in because he's confident that Naija Sings will be the biggest music television series to ever come out in Nigeria.

"The series will chart new territories in entertainment, provide a great source of historical music knowledge and show Nigeria and Nigerians in a way that Africa and the rest of the world have never seen."

He goes on to say, "I believe that Naija Sings will help to discover some incredibly talented individuals and groups, and I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the emergence of new young female singing talent, to be unleashed on the Nigerian music scene." A music connoisseur, Adibua ranks a diverse range of artists amongst his all time favourite performers including Fela Kuti, Rex Lawson, Stephen Osita Osadebe, Onyeka Owenu, King Sunny Ade, Sunny Okosun, Christy Essien Igbokwe, Victor Uwaifo, Bobby Benson, Bob Marley, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Elton John and recently fallen global music icon Michael Jackson.

Now preparing for Naija Sings, the efficient Adibua reveals that hosting his own radio show will help him in his upcoming television role. "No doubt, my knowledge and understanding of music both past and present, which is the major requirement in my daily radio shows, have come in very handy. All that is required now is specific research on information about the various contestants."

And the final words from this literature loving, sports-mad, comedy watching TV star are the best. He's says that he'll see the rewards for all his hard work and long hours during Naija Sings when, "A winner of Naija Sings has emerged, the ticker tape or confetti is flying around the air and the champagne is popping!"

DStv audiences can tune in for all the action, excitement and highlights from Naija Sings when the series begins on M-Net on Saturday July 11, 2009, at 19:00 (WAT).

Are you sure you are from Nigeria? Because you don't sound like one. I don't like it when the audience gives their comment. Some don't know what music is all about,so they just talk anyhow and its do depress the contestants. Please if you can stop the audience from giving comment and leave it to the invited judges that will be fine

Naija what happened? We allowed one of the best singers to be voted out, please let's vote right and based on performances and not on just looks; this isn't Mr. Nigeria, it is a singing competition. I would like to say this to Victor, u ve a wonderful voice and you are a good performer, go for it. We missed you today.

15 uduakamanda:
19/09/09

Based on today's performance, this is how we shud vote. Tamara, Riola, Jon and Tarila, trust me naija, vote right. Don't let the best go next week again. Nigeria, i love u, no matter what.

Olisa,I used to have so much respect for you but you have messed up yourself by being associated with this level of folly,You people would have told Africa that you had picked the winner even before the competition started.Jon still remaining in that competition shows your high level of partiality. You cannot tell me that Africans did not give Victor enough votes to keep him safe after those consistent brilliant performances. It is too obvious that you wanted the biggest threat out.so unfotunate.

OLISA,OLISA,OLISA.WHAT A BIG SHAME.NAIJA SINGS IS CHILD'S PLAY.NO COMPETITION IN THE FINALS WITH A STARE SINGER LIKE VICTOR OUT.YOU WUD'VE JUST CALLED JON TO THE HOUSE AND HANDED HIM THE PRICE THAN BRING HIM TO THE STAGE TO EMBARASS HIMSELF IN THE NAME OF SINGING.VICTOR CARRY GO.....YOU ARE THE BEST.

My beloved Niaja voters, please dont be blinded by beauty or handsomnes ok? we are not voting for that,Jon,Tarila,Riola are ok but TAMARA is the best let do our best for her she deserves it and with her being the winner, victor will not be forgotten in Naija sings. both can handle the cash wisely.

20 Lekkyy:
22/09/09

Jon is the man in de house, plz nigeria vote for Jon

21 Lekkyy:
23/09/09

We loves you Jon

22 deepuupooo:
23/09/09

its voting, so most times the best might not win. Surprised though that Victor did not make to at least the final. But Jon got looks, performs on stage, maybe not the best of voices but a unique one and he does stuffs effortlessly so he deserves it. To Tamara, remember you are as good as your last performance

23 CREATIVE, IA:

Tamara - Love youuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

Ladies & Gentlemen,I present to you the winner of the naija sings contest by appointment, bcos Africa knows he does not merit it,Ladies & Gentlemen I'm talking about the handsome, chocolate colour,Worst Vocal, imature voiced, panting singer.Pls help me welcome to the stage with a standing ovation to recieve the star prize as arranged.........J...O..N

Hash word by Franca Brian. Please, do not talk like that about someone who has done you no harm. He is the anchor, he is not responsible for how the votes were cast. So show some love and respect for a brotherman like Olisa. Olisa Please, I would prefer, in the next edition of Naija sings, that GOOD Judges who understand music be used. The voting option will always produce the same anomaly that sent Victor home while keeping Tarila safe. Not your fault but the voters fault...

26 noblesaint:
28/09/09

forget bout the looks, jon is still d BEST I EVER HAD, so lets give it to him okey... cuz he's got the sweet voice, average performance skills. so i think he can make a good singer and entertainer

27 Maq:
29/09/09

Jon has a good voice, but he is not the best musically speaking. Any good music judge will tell you Tamara is the best. A good singer has to be smart enough to choose a comfortable key, hold his/her notes and not sing off key.Tamara, just like Neto C said, has been very consistent. She is vocally superior to any of the finalists. I like Jon. I have been voting for him and Tamara. Now I've got to go with Tamara, cos we need someone who can represent Naija musically.

28 Xkuxememiss:
04/10/09

I am inspired

29 Maq:
06/10/09

I like Jon but I was not happy he won. Well, he won because he had more votes. I guess most people voted for him because he was a cute young guy. I am a cute guy too and I know what that brings. But hey! Tamara should have won that show if the organizers used judges. Jon's original solo on saturday was the worst of the three. It is so annoying that in shows like this where good talent should be rewarded, the story is the opposite all because the organizers want the voters to foot the bills.

30 Maq:
06/10/09

No offence to Olisa. Lots of respect for you.

31 Jullet:
09/10/09

Speaking in response to franca, u have no right to say that and u are very very wrong for saying olisa is been partial, olisa is only a messenger snd he has the truth in him victor is good so also is riola but they got little vote to remain in the competition, YOU MUST KNOW THAT NAIJASINGS WINNING DEPENDS ON THE NUMBER OF VOTES, JON IS ALSO A BOMB THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS JON HE HAS ALL THAT IT TAKES THE VOICE, APPEARANCE,AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD AROUND HIM, HE IS VERY UNIQUE AMONG THE CONTESTANTS

32 Jullet:
09/10/09

JON IS TOO MUCH TARILA AND TAMARA IS ALSO TOO MUCH I LOVE YOU ALL I SEE GREATNESS IN U ALL

33 Jullet:
09/10/09

ALL THE NAIJA LETS SUPPORT JON IN EVERYTHING JON U TOO MUCH THE MONEY BELONGS TO U, WITH JON ALL THE OTHER CONTESTANT WILL BENEFIT GRTLY JON IS VERY OPEN TO ALL
